      A native of New York City, he was raised in Shelby where he attended school. He also attended the Riverside Military Academy, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Phi Beta Kappa) and received a master's degree from New York University.

      While living in Charlotte, he owned and operated many retail shops including Cohen's of Shelby and Melville's Children's Shops. He also worked in many facets of real estate including stints with Colornet and ERA Realty. He was a member of Pi Lambda Phi Fraternity, a member and president of B'Nai Brith Men, a member of Temple Israel in Charlotte and Temple Beth El in Port St. Lucie and an active member of the Toastmasters.

      Mel loved life. He loved laughter, singing, the Miami Hurricanes and his Tarheels.

      He was preceded in death by his parents, Gertrude Posner Cohen and Harry S. Cohen and his sister, Rella Kort.
