LAKEVILLE - Bruce Chandler Durbrow, 76, died peacefully at Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center on June 11, 2016.
Bruce was born May 21, 1940, in Washington, D.C., the son of the late Emily (Moore) and Ambassador Elbridge Durbrow.
Growing up as the son of a diplomat, Bruce was a world traveler from a young age and spent many years living in Moscow and Rome. He graduated from Menlo School in Palo Alto, Calif.; earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California at Berkeley; and earned his master's degree from Fairfield University.
Bruce worked in operations and sales for Pan American in California and Fiji. He taught history and geography in Rome, Jamaica and Connecticut. He spent a number of years as a financial planner, a career counselor and a facilitator. He was also an early environmentalist who let nothing go to waste.
After carefully researching the greatest place for young children to be raised, Bruce and his ex-wife, Patricia Keating, moved their family to Lakeville in 1978. He was active in community programs including Youth Soccer, Youth Hockey and SWSA. He never missed his children's games or performances. When he was not coaching, he always had his video camera to document their accomplishments. After the loss of his son, Bruce was a passionate advocate who fought for legislation to change safety regulations to reduce truck driver fatigue.
Before returning to the familiarity of the Northwest Corner two years ago, Bruce lived in North Carolina, California, Texas and Maine. Bruce loved to listen to jazz, and he was a fabulous dancer.
Bruce is survived by his daughter, Kirsten Durbrow of Lakeville; and his brother, Chandler Wolcott Durbrow II of Arlington, Va.
He was predeceased by his son, Dean Chandler Durbrow.
There will be a private memorial service in New Milford, Conn.
